Our Story
In 2016, the film Wonderkid broke boundaries, challenged perceptions, and brought to light a story that had long been hidden in the shadows of professional sports. Directed by Rhys Chapman, Wonderkid is not just a film—it’s a movement, a voice for those who have long been silenced.
The film follows the journey of a talented young footballer navigating the pressures of professional sports while grappling with his identity. As he rises through the ranks, the protagonist faces the ultimate challenge: living his truth in an environment that has historically shunned diversity. Wonderkid is a raw, authentic portrayal of the struggles and triumphs faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the world of football, a sport that has long been considered a stronghold of traditional masculinity.
The creation of Wonderkid was made possible with the generous support of Ian McKellen. His involvement, along with the backing of several prominent brands and organisations, ensured that this important story reached the audience it deserved. All of whom recognised the significance of Wonderkid in sparking a much-needed conversation within the world of sports.
The impact of Wonderkid transcended the screen, igniting discussions around inclusion, acceptance, and the importance of representation in sports. Inspired by the film’s message, Wonderkid FC was born—a space where footballers of all identities could play the sport they love without fear of discrimination. Supported by long-term partners like Adidas, the club continues to create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ athletes, embodying the very principles that Wonderkid stands for.
